P. Ramlee would have turned 91 yesterday. #alfatihah

It's been 47 years since his passing, yet the story of P. Ramlee is so sadly familiar. The story of how true greatness was not recognised in its own time. He was an outstanding talent, an artistic genius, overcome by politics and events of the time. And he died with only a few dollars to his name.

He was recognised and showered with all sorts of titles and medals only LONG AFTER he had left us, heartbroken and disenchanted with the country, his life and the industry that today claims him as its "Seniman Agung”. If only he’d known how the country regales him today, he may just have fought a little harder to stay on and produce more unforgettable movies and songs.

In 2007, I produced a musical written and directed by the absolutely talented @adlinamanramlie which tells the story of P.Ramlee’s incredible, colourful life. This was a tribute to him, to recognise him for paving the way for future generations of performers like myself.

But also because it’s important to keep sharing his story, so the younger generations never forget the ORIGINAL Malaysian Greatest Showman.

Selamat Hari Lahir P. Ramlee. Semoga lagu dan irama mu kekal di pentas abadi.
